Hebron: A City of Refuge

Not long after I came on staff at Rochedale in December 1999, God gave me a word to share with the church. The word was that we were called to be like Hebron, an Old Testament city of refuge.
The prophetic word had three parts.

Hebron was:

  1. A city of refuge for those who had accidentally killed someone.
  2. A place of inheritance and ministry training for Levites.
  3. A part of Caleb’s reward and inheritance.

Our career or vocation is our divine life purpose or calling. No matter what we do for our work, we need to do the best we can do, honour God and see our work as our mission. We are called to be “salt and light”.

13 “You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled underfoot.
14 “You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. 16 In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.

What is Church?

If someone asked you to describe the church just using the bible what things would you say to describe it?

Your list could be long, but most people would refer to 4 basic things.

They were followers of Jesus who:

  • Gathered regularly
  • Loved God and loved one another
  • Were learning obedience and training others to obey Jesus
  • Were on mission

So if these 4 things were evident in the bible are they true of our church today?
